Football
The 1972 Manasquan Warriors delivered one of the most dominant seasons in program history, going 9-0 under Head Coach Jack Hawkins to claim the Shore Conference Class B Championship. The team outscored opponents in every game, announcing themselves as the premier program in the conference.
Running back Steve Merli was the engine of the offense, earning 1st Team All-Shore honors and the Shore Conference Player of the Year award — sharing the team's Peter Blocksom Roetzel co-MVP award with Ted Rafferto. Offensive lineman Stewart Whitman earned his own 1st Team All-Shore recognition, anchoring the line that opened holes all season.
The 1972 campaign was the first of back-to-back undefeated seasons under Hawkins, as the 1973 squad also finished 9-0. Together, those two seasons represent the apex of the Hawkins era. Coach Hawkins finished his ten-year MHS tenure (1968–1978) with an 81-18-2 record and was inducted into the New Jersey Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991.
Though the NJSIAA's points-based formula of the era did not award them a formal state title, the 1972 Warriors' perfect record, championship banner, and individual accolades have never been forgotten. Their induction into the MHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014 gave those players the recognition their season always deserved.

Nine wins, zero losses — the 1972 Warriors went undefeated and set the bar for Manasquan football.
