Cross Country
Track & Field
Charles "Chuck" Ferrell painted his greatest works three miles at a time — and those who watched him run at Manasquan stopped and said they had never seen anyone run like that before.
Ferrell earned seven letters at MHS — four in cross country and three in track — but it was cross country where he created his masterpiece. His career began in his sophomore year as he helped lead Manasquan to a division title, a feat he would repeat two more times. But it was in his junior and senior seasons (1974 and 1975) where he became legendary: during those two years, Ferrell never lost a Shore Conference race.
He became the first man in history to win the Monmouth County Individual Cross Country Meet in back-to-back years. He was the second man ever to win the Shore Conference Individual Meet in consecutive years, setting the course record at 14:23.3. At the state level, he won the NJSIAA Group III State Individual Championship in both 1974 and 1975, setting the state course record of 15:17 in the latter. He placed 8th out of 25 runners at the 1974 Meet of Champions.
The Asbury Park Press named him to the All-Shore team three times, twice as a first-team honoree. Simply put, Chuck Ferrell may have been the greatest cross country runner in Manasquan High School history.

He might have been the greatest cross country runner Manasquan High School has ever seen.
