Courteney "Skip" Whitman was a three-sport force at Manasquan High School — and his life after MHS proved equally extraordinary. In football, baseball, and wrestling, he earned 12 varsity letters and demonstrated the kind of toughness and versatility that would define his career in and out of uniform.
In football, Whitman was a standout offensive guard on the 1969 NJSIAA Group II State Championship team. He earned the 1969 William Spencer Osborn Award, was named 2nd Team All-Shore by the Asbury Park Press, and was named to the Associated Press All-State team as an Offensive Guard. His performance also earned him High School All-American recognition. He holds 5th place in MHS history for fumble recoveries in a season (4).
On the baseball diamond, he hit .491 in the 1969 championship season and was equally decorated: 1st Team All-Shore (APP), AP All-State Catcher, Daily Record All-County, and NY Daily News All-Star in 1970. He also captained the wrestling team and earned 1970 APP All-Shore recognition at 189 lbs.
After graduation, Whitman earned both Airborne and Ranger tabs, served 16 years in the United States Army, and became an orthopedic surgeon attached to the 82nd Airborne Division. During Operation Desert Storm, with an armored unit that advanced more than 100km into Iraq in 24 hours, Dr. Whitman performed the first orthopedic surgery in a theater of war in United States Army history.
