George "Chip" Hirst was one of the finest pitchers in Manasquan High School history. A standout right-hander and four-year letter winner under Coach Jack Hawkins, Hirst set the Shore Conference all-time career wins record at 33 — a mark that stood for 36 years until a Toms River East and Rutgers-bound pitcher surpassed it in 2006. He remains tied for first all-time in single-season wins at MHS with 12, a record he shares with the Class of 1986's Mike Mahady.
Hirst was the ace of Manasquan's 1969 NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II Championship baseball team. The following year, he led the Warriors to the Monmouth College Tournament title, earning the MCT Most Valuable Player Award. He was named 1st Team All-Shore by the Asbury Park Press in 1970.
On the basketball court, Hirst was a towering frontcourt player with a guard's touch. A three-year letter winner, he earned 1970 1st Team All-Shore and All-Division recognition from the Asbury Park Press, and was awarded the Frederick Lyman Abbott Basketball Award as MHS's most outstanding player. He went on to pitch at Erskine College in South Carolina, earning 1st Team All-District honors in the NAIA in 1972.

Shore Conference all-time career wins leader with 33 — a record that stood for 36 years.
