Harold "Buck" Thompson

Harold “Buck” Thompson stands as one of the most accomplished and historically significant athletes ever produced by Manasquan High School.

A member of the Class of 1940, Thompson starred in football, basketball, and baseball. On the football field, he played end for Coach Granville Magee’s single-wing teams from 1937 through 1939. During his senior season, Manasquan completed a perfect 8-0-0 season, winning both the Shore Conference and NJSIAA Group II titles. At the time, it marked the first team in conference history to win both the Shore and state titles in the same season.

Thompson earned unanimous All-Shore Conference honors, was named Second Team All-Group II, and received the Peter Blocksom Roetzel Award as Manasquan’s most outstanding football player. His reputation was so strong that a later Asbury Park Press article referred to him as “the greatest end Manasquan has ever produced.”

Thompson was equally impressive on the basketball court. As a senior, he was a leading member of the first Manasquan team to win 10 or more games in a season. The Blue and Gray finished 17-2, losing only in the final games of both the Shore Conference and state tournaments. Thompson finished third in scoring, was recognized as the Shore Conference’s “most outstanding pivot man,” earned All-State honors, and received the Frederick Lyman Abbott Award as the school’s most outstanding basketball player.

After Manasquan, Thompson continued his athletic career at the University of Delaware, playing football for Bill Murray’s Blue Hens. His college career was interrupted by military service during World War II, including landing at Normandy Beach on June 7, 1944. Upon returning, he helped lead Delaware to an extraordinary 25-0-1 stretch and, in 1946, guided the program to its first-ever postseason game, a victory over Rollins in the Cigar Bowl. Delaware claimed its first small-college national title that season and finished ranked 19th in the Associated Press major college football poll.

Thompson was selected as an AP Honorable Mention All-American and set two school records at Delaware that still stood at the time of his Hall of Fame recognition: longest kickoff return for a touchdown at 99 yards and longest rush from scrimmage at 98 yards.

In 1947, Thompson signed professionally with George Halas’ Chicago Rockets of the AAFC before being traded to Branch Rickey’s Brooklyn Dodgers of the All-America Football Conference. He became the first professional football player to graduate from either Manasquan High School or the University of Delaware.

Following his playing career, Thompson dedicated himself to education, coaching, and service. He taught and coached in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, served on the University of Delaware Board of Trustees, and chaired the University of Delaware Athletic Visiting Committee. His outstanding career earned him induction into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the University of Delaware Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
