LeRoy T. Fish stands as one of the most influential and historic figures in the early development of Manasquan High School athletics and student life. From 1928 through 1958, Fish dedicated thirty years of service to the school community, holding numerous leadership positions that helped define the culture and identity of Manasquan athletics for generations to come.
During his tenure at Manasquan High School, Fish served as the school’s first Supervisor of Athletics, while also contributing as Principal, Supervisor of Art and Manual Arts, Art and Manual Arts Teacher, First Baseball Coach, and Assistant Football Coach. His leadership extended far beyond the classroom and playing fields, helping establish the foundation of the school’s athletic programs during their formative years.
One of Fish’s most lasting contributions came in 1917 when he introduced Manasquan’s first official athletic uniforms and color scheme. Drawing inspiration from the colors of his World War I military unit, the 29th Infantry Division, he selected blue and gray as the school’s colors. For decades, Manasquan teams were known as the “Blue and Gray” before schools later transitioned toward mascot identities, eventually becoming the Warriors.
Fish’s influence was not limited to athletics. A talented artist and cartoonist, he was also involved in civic initiatives throughout Monmouth County, including serving on the committee responsible for the creation of the Monmouth County flag. His passion for creativity, education, and community service made him a widely respected figure both inside and outside the school.
Athletically, Fish also possessed an impressive playing background. He played professional baseball as a second baseman within the New York Yankees farm system and was known to have personal connections with legendary baseball icons Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
LeRoy T. Fish’s legacy is deeply woven into the history of Manasquan High School. His vision, leadership, and commitment to athletics and education helped build traditions that continue to define the school community today.

“A foundational architect of Manasquan athletics and school tradition.”
