As a center in football, he earned 3rd Team All State recognition from the AP in 1935 and Monmouth-Ocean County All Star Honorable Mention in all three of his varsity seasons. In 1936, he was named the MHS Outstanding Athlete.

In baseball, Wood captained the team and was recognized as an All State Third Baseman, leading the team in home runs. He also captained the basketball team as the center.
