Mike Mahady was a 10-letter athlete at Manasquan — earning letters in soccer, basketball, football, and baseball — but it was on the pitcher's mound where he wrote himself into school history.
His 1986 season stands as one of the finest individual pitching performances in MHS annals. He went 12-1 with 130 strikeouts in 86 innings and a 1.08 ERA. He alone set or tied school records that year in games pitched, games started, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, hit batsmen, wins, and ERA. He was named 1st Team All-Shore by the Asbury Park Press, 1st Team All-State by the Newark Star Ledger, All Group 2 by the Star Ledger, and NY Daily News All-Star — with an invitation to play in the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.
Mahady's arm carried Manasquan to the 1986 NJSIAA Group 2 State Title, the Central Jersey Group 2 Title, and the number one ranking in New Jersey as voted by the Star Ledger. In the state final run, he pitched the Group 2 Final on a Friday, came back for the Semi-Finals on Tuesday with more pitches than any previous start, and then on Saturday threw a 2-hit, 12-strikeout shutout over Jefferson in the Final, 6-0.
The Chicago Cubs selected him in the 1986 MLB Amateur Draft. The New York Yankees selected him in 1987. He also earned 2nd Team All-Shore recognition as a football punter, and his 12 wins in 1986 remain tied for the all-time MHS single-season wins record alongside George "Chip" Hirst (Class of 1970).

12-1, 130 strikeouts, 1.08 ERA in 1986. Drafted by the Cubs. Drafted by the Yankees. The greatest pitching season in Manasquan history.
